Democrats maintain dominance in New York

Polls in New York closed at 9 p.m. ET and the first batch of results showed that the Democrat stronghold was remaining firm in the midterms. The Democrats were expected to sweep the state and win nearly all of the house seats, as well as both the governor and senate races.

Wins included Senate Majority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer and Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Governor

Incumbent Kathy Hochul (D) faced Republican Lee Zeldin (R) in the state. Kathy Hochul was first elected into a national position after being elected to the US House of representatives in 2011. She was previous governor Andrew Cuomo’s running-mate in 2018.

A race to watch is that of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She became the youngest woman ever to serve in the United States Congress in 2018 when she beat Republican nominee Anthony Pappas with a margin over 44 points. This time round she was unchallenged to be the Democratic candidate and has amassed a war chest in excess of $11 million and will be up against Republican Tina Forte.
