Update:

The U.S. Department of Defense has made a decisive move by removing Colonel Susannah Meyers, commander of the Pituffik military base in Greenland. The dismissal follows a series of diplomatic tensions sparked by comments made by Vice President J.D. Vance, which caused friction not only between Washington and Copenhagen but also within the U.S. military ranks.

Why Colonel Meyers was removed

The controversy erupted when Vice President Vance, during an official visit to Greenland, suggested that the United States should consider incorporating the island as part of its territory. His statement triggered immediate backlash from both Danish officials and many Greenlandic political figures, who viewed it as a violation of their autonomy and a veiled attempt at territorial expansion.

Amid rising unease, Colonel Meyers issued an internal message to personnel at Pituffik, voicing her disagreement with Vance’s comments. In her view, the base — which hosts a multinational team and operates under a mission of international cooperation — should not be used to further U.S. territorial ambitions in Greenland.

The message was leaked to the press and quickly interpreted as an act of defiance against the Pentagon’s leadership. After an internal review, the Department of Defense removed Meyers from her post, stating that her actions undermined the discipline and standards expected of senior officers. “Commanders are held to the highest standards of conduct, especially regarding impartiality in the performance of their duties,” read an official statement from U.S. Special Operations Command.

Pentagon and Danish government respond

The decision sparked mixed reactions within the Pentagon and the Danish government. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said that Meyers’ comments did not reflect the image and principles the U.S. aims to uphold in the Arctic. Meanwhile, Danish officials welcomed the Pentagon’s swift response, emphasizing that any suggestion questioning Greenland’s sovereignty must be treated with the utmost seriousness.

Although Greenland remains under Danish sovereignty, it enjoys broad autonomy. Its people have repeatedly rejected the idea of joining the United States. This sentiment is also reflected at Pituffik, which, despite its strategic importance to both the U.S. and NATO, stands as a symbol of international cooperation in a geopolitically sensitive region.

Meyers’ removal highlights the complex dynamics between the U.S., Greenland, and Denmark when it comes to sovereignty and security in the Arctic. While defense collaboration continues, the growing divergence between Washington’s interests and those of Greenlandic authorities could pose future challenges. The U.S. may need to adopt a more measured tone when addressing issues related to Greenland’s status if it hopes to preserve ongoing partnerships in Arctic defense and resource exploration.

Strategic stakes in the Arctic rise

The incident also underscores the Arctic’s growing geopolitical significance. Climate change is opening new shipping lanes and exposing valuable natural resources, drawing global attention — including from powers like Russia, which is already increasing its military footprint in the region. In this context, sustained cooperation between the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland is more critical than ever to ensure regional stability.

In the months ahead, U.S. officials will need to handle matters relating to Greenland with greater sensitivity. The firing of Colonel Meyers may prove to be just the first of many signs that the Arctic — increasingly contested and resource-rich — won’t be immune to escalating tensions.
