Víctor Amat, psychologist: “Being a perfectionist is fine up to a certain point, but it can end up harming you”
The specialist and also author of the book ‘Punk Psychology’ focuses on a trait many interpret as “the highest possible degree of goodness.”

Psychologist Víctor Amat has done it again. In a digital landscape saturated with quick advice and supposedly magical formulas, one of his latest TikTok videos has sparked an uncomfortable but much-needed conversation: to what extent is the pursuit of perfection really a virtue?
In the clip, which went viral in just a few days, Amat challenges a deeply ingrained idea in contemporary culture: perfection as an unquestionable goal. “Being a perfectionist is fine up to a certain level, but it can end up hurting you,” he begins.
Not all perfectionism is good
For years, perfectionism has enjoyed a strong reputation. It is often linked to discipline, precision, and excellence, and is seen as a desirable trait both professionally and personally. However, Amat introduces an important nuance: not all perfectionism is healthy. There is a tipping point, often hard to recognize, where that pursuit stops being useful and starts to hold you back.
“At a certain level, it is good practice, but there is a point where it will paralyze you,” the specialist explains on TikTok. It is precisely at this extreme that some of its less visible consequences begin to appear: chronic indecision, procrastination, and constant anxiety about not measuring up.

“When you are chasing perfection, you take longer to make decisions and you are always stressed,” he adds. But perhaps the most striking line from the video, and the one that has drawn the most attention, is also the most direct: “Perfectionism is just a nicer way of saying you are scared.”
