The world’s largest department store chain, Walmart, has announced a few closures that will take place next month. These additional closures come on top of more than twenty last year. Unlike the previous closures, the new ones are not due to poor performance but rather because of the increased cost of leasing out the stores.

“In this case, we were unable to reach an agreement with the property owners to renew the leases at these two locations,” noted the company. Walmart hopes that customers affected by the closures will continue shopping online or visit the other locations in their area.

According to official company information, Walmart had over 10,500 branches worldwide in January 2024, with only 4,622 in the United States. However, the company will soon close two supermarkets, bringing this number down slightly. As retailers like Amazon become greater challengers to Walmart, they are working to meet customers where they are, and reducing their physical presence is one way to achieve this goal.

According to the press release issued by the multinational corporation, only California will be affected by the closures. The supermarkets that are set to close are:

  • Walmart Neighborhood Market: 2121 Imperial Ave, San Diego, CA 92102
  • Walmart El Cajon: 605 Fletcher Pkwy, El Cajon, CA 92020

It has been announced that both Walmart stores will be closed on Friday, February 9th. The closure of these stores will impact 357 employees, with 125 in San Diego and 232 in El Cajon. However, these employees will have the opportunity to work at neighboring branches if they prefer.
