What is hantavirus? The cause of death of Betsy Arakawa, Gene Hackman’s wife, explained
New Mexico officials have released what caused the death of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa who died about a week apart at their home.

Two weeks ago, iconic actor Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa and their dog were found dead at the family’s home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Authorities immediately ruled out foul play. Soon afterward they also discarded carbon monoxide poisoning.
Medical investigators have now released what caused the death of the couple, both were the result of natural causes. Oscar-winning Hackman, 95, died about a week after his wife from coronary artery disease. He also had advanced Alzheimer’s disease which was listed as a contributing factor.
Arakawa, 65, on the other hand died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a rare disease that can cause serious illness. However, its symptoms resemble many other respiratory illnesses which makes it difficult to diagnose according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
What is hantavirus?
HPS is the result of a infection with any of the hantaviruses, a family of viruses that are found worldwide. “The viruses are spread by infected rodents through their urine, feces, and saliva,” explains the CDC.
Hantavirus is primarily contracted by breathing in the virus. Most of the hantavirus family cause HPS, which primarily affects the lungs. Those hantaviruses found in North American are not known to spread from human to human, however, there has reportedly been spread between people of the Andes virus in South America says the CDC.
Nearly 40% of infections that develop into HPS result in death. That is why it is important for people to begin treatment as soon as possible advises the CDC, to have a better chance at recovery.
