Winter Storm Elliot is battering swaths of the United States bringing heavy snow, strong winds and flooding. It intensified to a bomb cyclone status as it moved towards the Great Lakes where it is expected to drop a foot of snow or more in the snow belts.

The winter storm of 2022 has left in its path over a million American households without power with temperatures plunging well below freezing as far south as the Gulf Coast. The blizzard conditions resulting in zero-visibility have disrupted travel and resulted in major deadly accidents and road closures across the US.

Those who wanted Christmas presents delivered at the last minute are most likely out of luck with the US Postal Service, FedEx, UPS and Amazon warning of delays as the severe weather hampers operations.

How long will Winter Storm Elliot last?

While Elliot will be moving into Eastern Canada on Saturday and snow falling from the sky will end outside of the snowbelts on the eastern side of the Great Lakes, strong winds blowing snow on the ground will continue to create dangerous conditions on the roads, causing headaches for travelers. The winds will also be capable of downing trees limbs that could knock out power, especially in areas where they are weighed down by heavy snow accumulation.

Heavy lake effect snow in the eastern Great Lakes could last into Christmas Day. The winter storm has also caused lakeshore flooding on the eastern side of Lake Erie and along the Northeast Coast.
