Nicolás Maduro will take office as president of Venezuela on Friday, Jan. 10, despite doubts about the validity of the official results of last year’s election.

Maduro is expected to begin a third six-year term, mired in controversy over the July 28 election results, with electoral authorities failing to provide detailed vote counts.

Opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez is likely to return to the country on the day of the inauguration, reportedly intending to be the one who will be sworn into office.

Another prominent opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado, appeared in protest marches on Thursday against Maduro’s election, marking her return to the streets after remaining in hiding since late August. She was arrested and later released.
