Update:

Pope Francis died on April 21 at the age of 88, almost a month after being discharged from the hospital in March. His discharge came after 38 days at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome (Italy), due to respiratory problems that led to bilateral pneumonia.

The ceremonies to bid farewell to the Holy Father continue, culminating on April 26, in the final farewell to Francis, with a burial that will take place in the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, rather than in St. Peter’s Basilica.

This decision was made at the Pope’s own request, and also due to his deep devotion to the Virgin Mary. In view of his funeral, it is worth noting the approval of a new ‘Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis’.

Specifically, it was on April 29, 2024, when Francis published the latest edition of the liturgical book for his funeral. This new document included new features for the Pope’s funeral rite. With this, the Supreme Pontiff sought to simplify the funeral rites. Therefore, he expressed his preference for a simple farewell, faithful to his personality and career.

What time is Pope Francis’s funeral?

After three days of viewing the Pope’s body in St. Peter’s, the funeral will be this Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m. local time (4 a.m. ET). It should be noted that this funeral takes place five days after his death, following Catholic liturgy.

Francis could not be buried before four days, nor later than six days. The three classic “stations” are thus maintained: the station at the deceased’s home, the station at the Vatican Basilica, and the station at the burial site, which precede the funeral rites. Thus begins a nine-day period of mourning, known as Novendiales

Who’s attending the Pope’s funeral?

It will be an austere event, with no traditional coffin-closing ceremony, but it will be attended by major world leaders. Among them are the President of the United States, Donald Trump; the President of France, Emmanuel Macron; and the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Changes introduced

On this occasion, the Holy Father’s body will be placed in a wooden coffin, thus eliminating the tradition of three coffins made of cypress, lead, and oak. The catafalque, the papal staff, and any titles other than bishop and pope will also be eliminated. Furthermore, Francis’ body is scheduled to be transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica on April 23.
