When will the Utah County attorney file charges against suspect Tyler Robinson related to Charlie Kirk’s assassination?

Approximately 40 hours after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox identified Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old man from Washington, Utah, as the principal suspect in the killing.

When will Tyler Robinson be charged?

Robinson is being held without bail in a Utah jail on several charges, including aggravated murder. However, the charges have not yet been officially filed. The Utah County Attorney’s Office confirmed that charges related to Kirk’s shooting are expected to be filed on Tuesday, September 16 by attorney Jeff Gray.

The county attorney’s office is reviewing evidence to determine which charges to pursue.

“Assuming all goes as planned and we file charges on Tuesday, Mr. Robinson’s first appearance will be Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. MDT (5:00 p.m. EDT),” said Christopher Ballard, chief of staff at the public information office of the Utah County Attorney’s Office.

Gov. Cox said Robinson was apprehended after law enforcement was contacted Thursday by a friend of Robinson’s family, who told investigators that Robinson had confessed to shooting Kirk.

Authorities also learned from a family member that Robinson had discussed Kirk’s upcoming visit to Utah Valley University in advance of the activist’s appearance.

Investigators said Robinson, who had become more politically active in recent years, expressed his dislike for Kirk, saying Kirk was “full of hate and spreading hate,” according to Cox.

Cox added, “[Robinson] was not a student here at UVU. He was living, and had lived for a long time, with his family in Washington County.”

FBI Director Kash Patel said Robinson was taken into custody at 10 p.m. local time Thursday. Patel added, “This is what happens when you let good cops be cops.”
