Who are the winners of the BET Awards 2022? Complete list: The Weeknd, Justin Bieber...
On what was a good night for male artists, Kendrick Lamar, Silk Sonic, a duo featuring Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars all headed home with awards.
The Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles was our BET Awards host for the evening on Sunday, where we watched Kendrick Lamar win the Best Male Hip Hop Artist award for the fifth time, breaking Drake’s previous record for most awards. Lizzo and Taraji P. Henson introduced the awards presentation, which honors Black success in music, entertainment, and sports, by criticizing the US Supreme Court’s decision on Friday to overturn the Roe v. Wade ruling that ensured access to abortion, a clear theme of the moment.
Abortion rights raised at BET Awards 2022
“Guns have more rights than a woman. It’s a sad day in America,” Henson said in her opening. “A weapon that can take lives has more power than woman who can give life, if she chooses to.”
“Fuck you, Supreme Court,” shouted Janelle Monae along with a middle finger raised - aligning with other recent messages we’ve heard from musicians - and said, while Best Female R&B/Pop Artist Jazmine Sullivan called on men to support women’s fight for their rights.
Lamar couldn’t pick up his awards on the night as he was performing at the Glastonbury Festival, but added Video of the Year for Family Ties, in his collaboration with Baby Teems, to the top gong. The Weeknd, Megan Thee Stallion, Mary J. Blige, and Lil Baby were among the other musical winners, with Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award. Will Smith won an acting award for King Richard, although the award was not given out during the ceremony due to his Oscars controversy, while Zendaya was awarded the equivalent in the female category. Naomi Osaka and Steph Curry won the Sportswoman/man of the Year Awards respectively.
