Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear won reelection in the state’s 2023 elections last night by five percentage points.

“Tonight, Kentucky made a choice, a choice not to move to the right or to the left but to move forward for every single family,” Beshear told supporters in Louisville.

Beshear assumed office in December 2019, after winning the gubernatorial election in November the same year. The incumbent governor’s Democrat affiliation did not prevent him from enjoying high approval ratings and much support from the Republicans which make up a plurality in the state.

Beshear’s bid for re-election was challenged by Republican Attorney General Cameron, who has defended Kentucky’s ban on abortion. He was supported by former president Donald Trump when he ran for the party nomination. Had he won, he would have been the state’s first black governor.

Who is Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear?

Andy Beshear comes from a prominent Kentucky political family. His father, Steve Beshear, also served as the Governor of Kentucky from 2007 to 2015. Andy Beshear is married to Britainy Beshear, and they have two children together.

Beshear’s career in public service began as an attorney. He served as the Attorney General of Kentucky from 2016 to 2019 before running for the governor’s office. During his tenure as Attorney General, he focused on issues such as healthcare, consumer protection, and combating the opioid epidemic.

His support for abortion rights, like in many states, is proving to be a serious vote winner. The state voted for Trump by more than 25 percentage points in 2020, showing how important this new issue has become for voters.

“As we’ve seen time and again following the overturning of Roe v. Wade – no matter how red the state – voters across the political spectrum oppose GOP attempts to rip away their freedom,” Jaime Harrison, DNC chair, said in a statement.
