Who is Matteo Zuppi, the Italian cardinal closest to Francis and widely seen as a leading candidate to become the next Pope
Matteo Zuppi, known for his advocacy for migrants and his long-standing work with the Community of Sant’Egidio, has emerged as one of the top contenders to succeed Pope Francis.

Zuppi’s lifelong commitment to society’s most vulnerable has defined his career as an Italian cardinal. His deep dedication to social justice and peace has positioned him among the favorites to lead the Catholic Church after Pope Francis. At 69, Zuppi is widely recognized for his grassroots pastoral style and his talent for conflict mediation—qualities that have earned him the nickname “the street cardinal.”
He joined the Community of Sant’Egidio in his youth, a lay Catholic organization focused on peacebuilding and interfaith dialogue. The community played a key role in shaping his formation and pastoral vision. Zuppi studied literature and philosophy at La Sapienza University in Rome, and theology at the Pontifical Lateran University, before being ordained a priest in 1981. His first assignment was the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, where he served for nearly twenty years.

Matteo Zuppi: Peace mediator and pastoral leader
One of the most defining moments of Zuppi’s career was his involvement in the negotiations that ended Mozambique’s civil war in 1992. His diplomatic skills have since been called upon in multiple global conflicts, including efforts in Burundi, Kosovo, and Colombia. These experiences have solidified his reputation as a leader devoted to peace and reconciliation.
In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him auxiliary bishop of Rome. Three years later, Pope Francis named him archbishop of Bologna. His elevation to cardinal in 2019 was a recognition of his pastoral commitment and leadership. As archbishop, Zuppi has promoted an open, dialogical Church focused on social issues and inclusion of society’s most marginalized.
