Secretary Buttigieg has become one of VP Harris’ strongest supporters as her campaign gets underway, drawing on his personal story, including his marriage, in his political messaging.
Since President Joe Biden announced that he would drop out of the presidential race, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has become one of Kamala Harris’s strongest supporters. Appearing in various media interviews, the secretary has spoken out against comments made targeting the vice president, made by Donald Trump’s running mate, JD Vance.
Ohio Senator Vance, who was named as Trump’s VP pick at the RNC convention in Wisconsin in mid-July, has attacked both Harris and Buttigieg by claiming that the Democratic party is run by “childless cat ladies” or childless leaders writ large. Vance claims that those without children do not have a stake in the future of the country, like parents do, which has received widespread condemnation from Democrats and even some Republicans.
When Vance initially began making these comments before being elected to the Senate, Secretary Buttigieg was married, but he and his husband were struggling in their adoption process. Buttigieg married Chasten Glezemen in 2017, and the two became parents of fraternal twins in late 2021. The couple met in South Bend, Indiana, when Buttigieg was serving as mayor and Chasten was working as a middle school teacher.
Secretary Buttigieg on the offensive
In an interview with Pod Save America, Secretary Buttigieg remarked on how the GOP, which claims to be a pro-family party, has an extremely “selective interpretation” of what an American family can look like. Additionally, the secretary spoke to the increasingly hostile attitude to IVF held by many Republicans and how curtailing access to fertility treatments could destroy the dream of many to start a family.
The secretary is just one of many candidates who could fill the VP slot alongside Harris on the November ballot. As to when who her running mate will be, the announcement is expected to come in the coming weeks. The Democrats are slated to host their convention, where Harris is expected to secure the party’s nomination, alongside who ever she chooses to run with.
