Who is Wilton Daniel Gregory, the first African American cardinal in U.S. history and a leading contender to become the next Pope
The first African American to be named a cardinal in the United States, Wilton Daniel Gregory is seen as a figure of renewal and social justice.

Born on December 7, 1947, in Chicago, Wilton Gregory has long been a prominent voice in the American Catholic Church. His elevation to the College of Cardinals marked a historic step toward greater diversity and inclusion in the Church’s hierarchy.
Gregory’s conversion to Catholicism
Gregory converted to Catholicism as a young man and was ordained a priest in 1973. He earned a doctorate in liturgy from the Pontifical Anselmian Athenaeum in Rome in 1980. His episcopal career began in 1983 when he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Chicago.
He later served as bishop of Belleville (1993–2004), archbishop of Atlanta (2004–2019), and archbishop of Washington (2019–2025). In 2020, Pope Francis elevated him to cardinal, making him the first African American to hold that title.
An approach aligned with Pope Francis
Gregory is widely known for his progressive outlook and strong commitment to social justice. As president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (2001–2004), he played a key role in leading the Church’s institutional response to the clergy sexual abuse crisis, championing the “Dallas Charter” to protect minors and hold clergy accountable.
As archbishop of Washington, Gregory did not shy away from political confrontation. In 2020, he openly criticized then-President Donald Trump’s visit to the Saint John Paul II National Shrine, calling it incompatible with Christian values.
A papal contender in the conclave
Though he has stepped down from his role in Washington after turning 77, Gregory remains a powerful figure within the Church. His long record of human rights advocacy and his inclusive, pastoral approach may resonate with a conclave seeking to project a more diverse and socially engaged Catholic Church.
