Some would say that the Republican Party’s presidential nomination is an easy target for ridicule... and they’d be correct.

Whether you can’t stand hearing a single word coming out of his mouth or you wouldn’t blink if he shot someone on 5th Avenue, few can disagree that former, and potentially future, president of the United States, Donald Trump, is box office. He has a knack of getting attention, not always in the way he intends, and the latest offering is across social media, with the hashtag #DonPoorleone trending on Sunday.

What does #DonPoorleone mean?

You don’t really need me to explain this, right? OK, so maybe some youngsters out there haven’t (yet) seen The Godfather and therefore the obvious leap to Don Vito Corleone (the iconic character played by Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro and Oreste Baldini) isn’t so clear.

Well, for them, just think about the head of the mafia, as per the fictional Sicilian immigrant, and then switch to the current presidential hopeful who’s in a whole heap of financial trouble despite his claims otherwise. And that has led to a bunch of memes and quips at his expense. Allow me to give you a sense of what’s going on out there...

If you didn’t just come here for an explanation of the trending hashtag and actually just want as many memes as you can stomach before bedtime, then feel free to pop over to X and this link will keep you happy for as long as imaginations feel like keeping it going.
