According to its holiday calendar, Costco locations in the United States are closed on New Year’s Day, Easter Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
Why does the US celebrate Labor Day in September and not in May like other countries?
According to the Department of Labor, it is unclear who first suggested the Labor Day holiday be held in September.
Some sources say Matthew Maguire proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the New York Central Labor Union. Other historians suggest that Peter J. Mcguire, co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, suggested a holiday for the “working classes” in 1882.
According to the Department of Labor, the first celebration of the holiday was the Labor Day Parade in New York City on September 5, 1882. As for the reasons for celebrating Labor Day in September, it is speculated that it was because it was considered a more politically neutral date than May 1, which traces its origins to the Haymarket Riot in Chicago, Illinois. Another reason was to bridge the long gap that existed between the July 4 holiday and Thanksgiving in November.
