Update:

How do you like your eggs? Boiled? Scrambled? Fried? Poached? In an omelette, or maybe a frittata? Whatever your preference, the US government claims you should have been making the most of a price drop in recent weeks, although recent statistics mask a much bigger problem.

Trump administration reports eggs price drop

The Trump administration, specifically Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, told reporters earlier this week that egg prices had dropped by $1.85 per dozen since the United States Department of Agriculture announced an investment of up to $1 billion to fight against bird flu, which has driven up costs, by importing eggs from other countries and repopulating chickens that had to be euthanized.

Joe Biden especially let the price of eggs get out of control - the egg prices out of control. We’re working hard to get it back down,” Trump said in an address to Congress.

Numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, though, show that while there may have been a recent decrease, there has been a significant price hike over a longer period of time.

Huge hike in price of eggs

Between February 2024 and February 2025, egg prices shot up by a whopping 58.8%. Even from January to February this year, there was a 12.5% jump, with the average price of a dozen eggs reaching $5.90. As recently as August 2023, that would have set you back only $2.

The bad news, however, is that the supposed recent drop will be cancelled out by a new jump, as Rollins herself confirmed.

Eggs for Easter

“We’re going into Easter season. This is always the highest price for eggs. We expect it to perhaps inch back up.”

Eggs, of course, play a prominent role at both Easter (April 20) and Passover (April 12 to April 20), and with high demand come high prices.
