Will you receive $1,900 from Social Security on Wednesday, Dec. 18? Find out if you’re on the list
On December 18, the SSA will distribute another round of Social Security checks, with the average check worth $1,900. Are you on the list?
The Social Security Administration (SSA) issues millions of monthly payments to beneficiaries of the programs it oversees, including retired workers, survivors, and Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income recipients.
The agency uses a distribution schedule based on recipients' birth dates. For most recipients of Social Security, they are issued on Wednesdays:
Workers who retired before May 1997 and SSI recipients are covered by an older distribution scheme. This group receives their payments on the first day of the month, regardless of their date of birth.
How much is the average Social Security check worth for a retired worker?
Although in November, the average retired worker’s monthly benefit stood at $1,925.46, more than half of beneficiaries receive a smaller check, based on 2023 data published by the SSA. Last year, around 52 percent of retired workers received a check worth $1,899 or less.
Who will receive a payment on December 18?
The next round of payments is slated for delivery on Wednesday, December 18, and will be sent to the middle group with birthdays between the 11th and 20th of any month.
When will the final payment be sent?
The final group, those born on the 21st or later, will see their payment distributed on Tuesday, December 24, as Christmas falls on a Wednesday. When a public holiday clashes with the payment schedule, the SSA sends the check on the previous working day.
The final payment made by the SSA in 2024 will be sent to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries, who are typically paid on the first of the month. However, like Christmas, New Year’s Day is a public holiday, meaning that the payments will come a day early, on December 31.
