As Spring begins this week, temperatures are dropping across the South of the United States. The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for parts of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Texas.

Nearly a dozen warnings have been issued for Monday night and Tuesday morning, with the vast majority set to expire between 8 and 9 AM on 19 March, the first day of Spring.

All central Alabama, East Arkansas, North Mississippi, and West Tennessee could see temperatures drop as low as 26 degrees, and residents should be prepared to “take steps [...] to protect tender plants from the cold.” Pipes should be wrapped or drained to prevent freezing and bursting outdoors. Temperatures will be in the low 30s in Southwest Alabama and Southeast Mississippi.

Hoovering around twenty-eight degrees will be in parts of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas, where the warning will be in effect from midnight on Tuesday through 9 AM.

To find all the affected counties and more details on the warnings, please visit the National Weather Service website.

Areas that will be under Winter Storm Warnings as Spring begins

So far, the National Weather Service has only issued one Winter Weather Advisory that will be active on Tuesday. The Eastern Lake Ontario Region will be under a Winter Weather Advisory until 5 AM on Tuesday, with anywhere between five and nine inches of snow expected to accumulate and winds reaching 35 mpg.

“The hazardous conditions could impact the evening or Tuesday morning commute,” reports the NWS, and drivers are encouraged to take necessary precautions as snow can limit visibility and create dangerous conditions for driving.
