Electronic Arts cancels EA Play 2022, will show games “when the time is right”
Through a statement, Electronic Arts announced that this summer they will not have their traditional showcase to announce their upcoming titles.
Electronic Arts has revealed that it will not hold its traditional EA Play event in 2022.
According to a statement made by the company to IGN, Electronic Arts believes that "this year things aren't lining up to show you everything on one date" Instead, the company will reveal information related to its upcoming titles and projects "when the time is right for each of them."
“We love EA Play Live as it's our way of connecting with our players and sharing what’s new with all of you,” wrote Electronic Arts. “However, this year things aren't lining up to show you everything on one date. We have exciting things happening at our world-class studios and this year we’ll reveal much more about these projects when the time is right for each of them. We look forward to spending time with you throughout the year!”
Although Electronic Arts had been an important company with conferences prior to the start of E3, it was in 2016 when they changed its traditional press conference and held a space open to press and public called EA Play. However, in past years, and due to COVID-19, this event -along with others related to E3- changed its format to a fully digital event.
What's on the horizon for Electronic Arts?
Although summer is a time for companies to show us what they are working on, Electronic Arts has maintained a consistent pattern with its annual titles, as well as some other titles that have been in development for some time.
On an annual basis, we can expect the 2023 versions of sports titles like Madden NFL, FIFA among others, as well as an upcoming expansion of The Sims 4. Titles like the next Dragon Age or those announced last year like Skate 4 or the new Mass Effect are also in the minds of fans and of which we know nothing more than that they are in development. And just last week we had news about Dead Space, which was confirmed to arrive in early 2023.
Also, we have a lot of Star Wars titles from Respawn Entertainment that although they were announced very recently, it would have been nice to know more details.
On the other hand, a shooter like Apex Legends may not need the spotlight of an EA Play because of its game-as-a-service nature. For now, there would be no announcement related to Battlefield, although the next mobile version is still pending.
For now, we know that the summer looks complicated, considering that the ESA canceled the in-person version of E3 2022 very early this year.
