Xbox to raise the price of its first-party next-gen games to $70 in 2023

The Xbox division confirms the price increase of its in-house productions for Xbox Series X|S starting in 2023, such as Starfield and Forza Motorsport.

Update:
Xbox to raise the price of its first-party next-gen games to $70 in 2023

Xbox will raise the price of its internally produced games by $10 starting in 2023. In the U.S. it will go from $59.99 to $69.99 at launch. Games like Redfall, Starfield, and the upcoming Forza Motorsport will be the first to embrace the new pricing scale.

"This price reflects the content, scale, and technical complexity of these titles," an Xbox spokesperson told IGN. "As with all games developed by our teams at Xbox, they will also be available with Game Pass the same day they launch." The increase has been made official in the United States, although IGN notes that the increase "may differ" in other markets.

Phil Spencer has already warned

Phil Spencer, head of the division, already said last October that price increases in its products were inevitable. "I do think at some point we'll have to raise the prices on certain things," Spencer shared in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "but going into this holiday we thought it was important to maintain the prices. We've held price on our console, we've held price on games... and our subscription. I don't think we'll be able to do that forever.."

The deal has kept that commitment: prices will be frozen these holidays. In fact, Xbox has declined to comment on IGN's question about whether it would also raise the price of Xbox X Series X|S. It will be games first, and who knows if consoles or Game Pass will follow close behind.

Its main rival was the first to take the plunge with these changes. In August, it was confirmed that the official price of PlayStation 5 had been raised in some regions of the world such as Canada, Mexico, Europe, and Japan, to name a few. In addition, the price of exclusive titles for that generation rose to $70 from the beginning of the generation.
