Bloober Team

Silent Hill 2 remake devs claim it’ll be “faithful to the original”

Developer Bloober Team has claimed that for the upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake, they’ve chosen to take a “safe approach” to changes made to the legendary game.

Update:
Silent Hill 2 remake devs claim it’ll be “faithful to the original”

It seems like fans of Silent Hill 2 have nothing to fear with the upcoming remake, now that developer Bloober Team has come out to say that they’re being “faithful to the original title” in their efforts to modernize the game for current hardware.

During an interview with DreadXP, Bloober Team’s marketing chief Anna Jasińska revealed that the team at the studio was given free reign by Konami to transform the legendary psychological horror game to whatever their own vision was. Thankfully, this doesn’t mean that they’ve chosen to change the game, or that they’ll miss the extremely important context of the world’s design.

"We are focusing on bringing the distinct, visceral atmosphere back in the modernized Silent Hill 2,” said Jasińska. “Longtime fans shouldn’t worry about us 'missing the point' while we’re livening up the title. We faithfully stick to the traditional story canon while remaking the gameplay and updating the graphics from the ground up."

Horror takes a (literal) new form

It appears that the team is as fond of the source material as the franchise’s fans are, but this doesn’t mean that there won’t be changes to the game. Thankfully, they’ve so far revealed that most of these changes will come from graphics and gameplay mechanics, like the combat and exploration. Jasińska confirmed that Bloober Team is taking a “very safe approach to any changes”, but that they’re not shying away from "applying adjustments to certain areas where things need modernizing due to the passage of time".

"A big visible change is the adoption of an over-the-shoulder camera, which altered the perspective of a few iconic set pieces, but also meant an overhaul to the combat system. As you see, we are not straying away from the original concept of making this cult classic; we just have some ideas on how to make the peculiar scare factors more appealing to the contemporary audience."

After many years of silence, Konami finally announced the existence of the Silent Hill 2 remake this past year during a special livestream focused on the future of the franchise. But it did not come back alone: the company announced several other titles are already in production, with teams all over the world working on reviving the Silent Hill series from the limbo it’s been in for almost a decade.
