Final Fantasy VII Remake is a reimagining of the original, a title that takes the classic as its point of reference, but veers in other directions. Not only does the battle system and exploration change, but the story is also modified and expanded. In an interview with VG24/7, producer Yoshinori Kitase has reflected on the specific reasons that led him to make that decision.

“We approached the FF7 Remake project with the aim to make it something that could be enjoyed by both fans of the original game and people who did not know it.“ Kitase said. According to the producer, he has also bought remakes of games that he loved in his day, moved by nostalgia: "It is enjoyable for a while, but the fun from that nostalgia only really lasts through the first sections. I realized this halfway through and didn’t carry on playing."

Nostalgic and fresh

“Because of this, I decided that Final Fantasy VII Remake would not just appeal to nostalgia, but would also include a new story as well to feel both nostalgic and fresh at the same time”. The first installment of the remake gives way to two sequels, which will also deviate from the main story told in the 1997 game.

“The result of this is that, for Part 2 and Part 3, we are able to give fans the excitement of wondering which parts will be 100% faithful to the original – and where the new elements will be added.”

Final Fantasy VII Remake is available on PS4, PS5, and PC. The game was expanded with the Intergrade DLC, but Square Enix is already fully focused on the second installment, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, which is set to release during the winter of 2023/2024.
