Capcom Fighting Collection 2: Remembering Capcom’s 2D and 3D Eras

The most unique mix in Capcom’s history.

Capcom continues to make its past games more accessible and easier to preserve. Within its extensive catalog, the company is known for its multiple franchises in the fighting genre. This time, the collection adds a new chapter to these games. Capcom Fighting Collection 2 arrives three years after the first installment and about a year after the release of Marvel vs. Capcom: Arcade Classics. What will this new installment contain? Let’s take a look.

Between 2D, 3D and collaborations

As its name suggests, Capcom Fighting Collection 2 is a collection of fighting games developed by Capcom between 1998 and 2004. The collection includes eight titles, including the unexpected collaboration with SNK, as well as lesser-known titles such as Plasma Sword and Capcom Fighting Evolution. The collection reflects a time when experimentation with both 2D and 3D titles was common, and new franchises were being created. There were also unexpected encounters between Capcom titles and other brands.

These are the games of the Capcom Fighting Collection 2:

  • Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000
  • Capcom vs. SNK 2
  • Plasma Sword: Nightmare of Bilstein
  • Power Stone
  • Power Stone 2
  • Project Justice
  • Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper
  • Capcom Fighting Evolution

If you have played other Capcom fighting game collections, you may have an idea of what to expect. You will initially have the option to play offline or online, as well as visit a museum and gallery of the games in the collection. You can also see the achievements or trophies available in the game. After choosing whether to play online or offline, you can select one of the eight available games, each with its own options.

Each game arrives in its original format, offering a walk down memory lane with the 3:4 screen layout. Artwork on the sides completes the screen space. Many of the options seen in previous versions of these Capcom collections are preserved. You can review the characters’ move lists, adjust the controls, screen, and sound.

However, one area where improvement is needed is the Quick Save feature. It allows us to save at a certain point in the game so that we can return to a fight or a certain point in the challenge. As in previous collections, though, we can only have one of these points per game. In other words, if you play Power Stone 2, make a Quick Save, and then move on to Marvel vs. SNK, the game will not allow you to create a new Quick Save without deleting the previous one.

As for the games, the selection of titles is unique, showcasing a period when Capcom started creating new franchises and experimenting with different formats. Most of the titles are 2D, though some have 3D elements, and games like Power Stone are completely 3D. It’s also striking that the collection includes two sequels, Plasma Sword: Nightmare of Bilstein and Project Justice, without their original titles. This is true not only for this release but also for their previous version. Including them would have provided more insight into these titles and brought the number of titles in the collection closer to that of the first Capcom Fighting Collection.

Another notable detail is that the games run quite well. For those who are nostalgic, the display options include different filters that make the game look more like an arcade screen. Additionally, you can switch between the English and Japanese versions of the games. Some games even change their names completely.

Capcom Fighting Collection 2 lets you explore a specific period in the company’s history. At its core, it’s similar to previous collections from the brand, making it easy to navigate. The selection of games showcases a pivotal moment in the brand’s history, and it’s worth noting that each port runs quite well. Of course, it’s just a compilation of games, so if you want to replay an old game or discover lesser-known gems, this is a must-have for your collection.
