Horses and Stables in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - How to obtain and store horses

Horses and stables are back in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This page of our Tears of the Kingdom guide will tell you how to tame wild horses and how to keep horses so you can use them whenever you want:

How to tame wild horses in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

As you explore the Kingdom of Hyrule, you may come across herds of wild horses. As in Breath of the Wild, all you have to do to tame a wild horse is crouch down and quickly climb on top of it. A little soothing by pressing L is enough to tame it. Of course, you will lose stamina in the process.

At this point in the map, we have found wild horses very close to where we are supposed to start once we can explore the surface. It is in the center of Hyrule, north of the Romani Plains:

How do you use horses in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

Horses mechanics are the same as in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild:

  • We can spur the horse to speed up. The available spurs appear on the screen; they can be regained with time or by stroking the horse. If we spur the horse again when there are no more spurs available, the horse will throw us to the ground.
  • We can pet the horse to calm it down and get the spurs back faster.
  • Each horse is different and will have a different maximum number of spurs.
  • We can increase our friendship with our horse by riding it often and treating it well.
  • Horses will automatically jump over obstacles that are approximately their height.
  • We can feed them by approaching their head with food such as fruit in our hands.
  • We can call them to our position when they are near by pressing down on the D-pad.

How to keep horses in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

As in Breath of the Wild, in Tears of the Kingdom we can board and register our horses at the stables. These are the stables scattered around the map that look like this:

There is always a shrine near each post, so we can quickly teleport to them using fast travel. The first time we speak to a stable manager, we will need to register and receive a membership card. If you have saved your data from Breath of the Wild and registered your horses with the stables, you will be able to restore them and use them again.

Every time we want to board and register a new horse, we have to take it to a post. Once there, we talk to the manager again to give the horse a name and save it:

We can have a maximum of six horses registered in the stables.

As you know, in our The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom guide, we talked about all sorts of aspects of the game, including where to find the Hylian Shield and, related to this page, which are the best horses.
