Pokémon Go: how to capture Zygarde, get Zygarde Cells, everything you need to know

Routes have arrived to Pokémon GO, allowing all trainers to go on pre-built journeys around their area and even build their own to share with the rest of the world. And while these will give you a lot of rewards and opportunities to catch Pokémon, there’s also something else waiting for them: the legendary Ground/Dragon Pokémon, Zygarde, from gen 6 (X and Y).

Known as “The Order Pokémon”, Zygarde comes to the game with a Special Research questline that’ll help you find and capture it for yourself. Starting from July 21 at 10 a.m. local time, and exclusively until July 24 at 8 p.m. local time, the “Blaze New Trails” event will be available for trainers to try out the new Routes mechanic. However, getting Zygarde only requires you to follow its Special Research stages.

How to get Zygarde in Pokémon Go

To get a chance of encountering Zygarde, you’ll need to follow and complete the “From A to Zygarde” Special Research quests. This should have already popped up for anyone opening the game as a conversation with the Professor, which means you can begin working on the steps to complete it.

However, there’s no need to do all of the steps for you to encounter a Zygarde. You only need to complete Stage 3 of the 6 available to get a chance to capture the legendary pokémon. Below you’ll find all of the tasks and the rewards for completing those stages

What are Zygarde Cells, and how to get them?

When you do capture Zygarde, it’ll be in a fairly weak state. This is because it’s a special Pokémon that has several different Formes it can achieve. Once it get to its “Complete Forme”, Zygarde is “powerful enough to overwhelm fellow Legendary Pokémon Xerneas or Yveltal.”

And the way you upgrade Zygarde is through “feeding” it Zygarde Cells. This material can only be found while walking along Routes, so you’ll have to participate in this new mechanic to get your new creature to max power. As you walk through a Route, you may notice green glowing spots on the ground in the map (as shown in the image above). When you interact with these you’ll collect Zygarde Cells into the Zygarde Cube you got when capturing the Pokémon.

Once you have enough Cells in your Zygarde Cube, you’ll be able to transform your Zygarde into its 50% Forme, or its 100% Forme. With a maximum CP of 4267, the possibilities of this Pokémon are incredibly powerful.
