Update:

Rick and Morty’ is set to expand beyond television with a feature-length film now officially in development. The project was confirmed by series co-creator Dan Harmon and will mark the first time the Adult Swim franchise makes the jump to a standalone movie format.

According to an interview with CinemaBlend, the film will be directed by Jacob Hair, the show’s current supervising director and a long-standing member of the creative team. Hair joined the series during its fourth season and has since directed several of its most well-regarded episodes, helping define the show’s balance between high-concept science fiction and character-driven storytelling, with episodes such as “The Old Man and the Seat,” “Rattlestar Ricklactica,” and the Emmy-winning “The Vat of Acid Episode.”

A Massive 90-Minute Adventure Built for Fans

Speculation about a ‘Rick and Morty’ movie has circulated for years, but recent leaks prompted the creators to formally acknowledge the project. Harmon has previously stated that early development discussions began in October 2023, and he has been clear about the intended approach. “My philosophy would be to just take a Rick and Morty adventure, and spend a bunch of extra money on it, and make it 90 minutes long,” Harmon said back in 2023. “Not to try to earn its feature status by virtue of canonical dramatic tone shifts or anything like that, but rather to just make it a super badass episode of Rick and Morty.”

It remains unclear whether the film will be closely tied to the show’s ongoing continuity or function as a standalone story. However, its development comes at a moment of relative stability for the franchise. Four more full seasons are already contractually secured, and additional renewals remain possible depending on performance.
