Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a global hit, except in this one place, and it’s for a simple reason

Western RPGs rarely dominate Japan’s market... did Clair Obscur face an uphill battle?

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has taken the world by storm, selling over 2 million copies worldwide. However, despite its JRPG inspirations, the game has struggled to gain traction in Japan, where it debuted at #4 on the Famitsu sales charts, selling just 9,825 physical copies.

Why hasn’t Clair Obscur clicked with Japanese players?

While the game’s turn-based combat and deep storytelling align with traditional JRPGs, several factors may have contributed to its lukewarm reception in Japan:

  1. Limited marketing presence – Unlike major JRPG franchises, Clair Obscur didn’t receive heavy promotion in Japan, making it less visible to local audiences.
  2. Western-developed RPGs rarely dominate – Japan tends to favor homegrown RPGs, with titles like Final Fantasy and Persona consistently outperforming Western-developed games.
  3. Competition from local hits – The game launched during Golden Week, a period dominated by Japanese-developed titles like The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy- and Super Mario Party Jamboree.

Despite its strong global sales, Clair Obscur may have struggled to break into Japan’s RPG-heavy market, where brand recognition and cultural familiarity play a huge role in success.

While Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been a breakout hit worldwide, its modest performance in Japan highlights the challenges Western RPGs face in the region. Still, with strong word-of-mouth and potential future updates, the game could gain traction over time.
