Dead Cells developers officially end support for the game after 5 years, no more content to be released

After five years of DLC, new content, crossovers, and more, the developers behind indie gem Dead Cells are ready to end support and work on new projects.

Dead Cells, the fantastic 2D indie roguelite that recently released a crossover with the Castlevania series, is coming to its official end very soon. After 5 years of constant updates and new content releases, the developers announced that there will be no more content drops for the game after the next update.

After nearly 5 years of service, 4 DLCs, 18 updates, some epic crossovers and a mobile release with Playdigious, Evil Empire will no longer be working on Dead Cells,” says the message from Evil Empire. In the full message the studio thanks Motion Twin (the original devs) for letting them work with them and their property, and talk about how much they liked working on the game. The news however are for a very good reason: Evil Empire is looking to focus their efforts and resources on new projects.

For their part, Motion Twin explained that this decision was made internally to allow the game to not overextend the scope of the game. In a way, it’s meant to let the game go out with a bang, and after the incredible “Return to Castlevania” DLC expansion, this seems like an incredibly high point at which to leave the title.

The official message on the game’s Steam page says: “Our commitment to avoiding the “more of the same” trap and keeping Dead Cells fresh and original has led us to this point; as we’ve seen with other long-running series, it’s crucial not to overextend and risk diminishing the unique charm that makes Dead Cells special to us all. This change explains the recent quiet period on updates, as concluding such a partnership required careful planning to ensure a smooth process for everyone, including the community.”

However, while the game will no longer be updated with new content, the franchise will live on thanks to an upcoming animated series, as well as a board game adaptation that is already in production.
