Doom: The Dark Ages now has a release date and proves that things are changing at Xbox

Microsoft’s new studios are beginning to stabilize after their acquisitions, and the company is announcing a release schedule that spans the entire year rather than being concentrated in the last quarter.

Doom: The Dark Ages

First, it was run and gun, then jump and shoot, and now stand and fight. Doom: The Dark Ages was the culmination of a sensational Xbox Developer Direct. Microsoft confirmed that the game will arrive on May 15, 2025, and also made it clear that we are in for one of the most ambitious and risky deliveries in history.

Because yes, it will be the usual adrenaline rush and continue to have the exquisite gunplay that is already a trademark of id Software, but in addition, this Doom: The Dark Ages is full of new features. It will focus more than ever on the narrative, it will completely renew the melee, it will have levels described with the word sandbox and it will even have Kaijus and Panzer Dragoon-like stages. It should not be said that they are satisfied with doing more or better, and it should not be branded as a continuist.

The fact is that between the Ninja Gaiden 2 Black remaster in Unreal Engine 5, the release date of Doom: The Dark Ages and the also imminent South of Midnight (on sale April 8th), it is noticeable that something is changing at Xbox. The company refuses to bet all its chips on a single release at the end of the year to try to scrape a GOTY nomination at The Game Awards (it’s about time). It wants a stable schedule without the usual long gaps between one big game and the next.

The Xbox Game Studios lineup for the first half of 2025 is shuddering, and there’s still half a year to go.
