Elden Ring Nightreign may get a two-player mode after all, but it would arrive post-launch

Players have been wondering why duets was not an option to play the anticipated FromSoftware multiplayer game.

FromSoftware’s upcoming Elden Ring Nightreign is designed for solo play or three-player squads, but fans hoping for a two-player mode may not be out of luck. In a recent interview, game director Junya Ishizaki acknowledged that duo play was overlooked during development, but confirmed that the team is considering adding it in a post-launch update.

Why wasn’t a two-player mode included?

According to Ishizaki, Nightreign was built with three-player squads in mind, meaning the game’s balance, enemy behavior, and mechanics were all designed around that structure. While solo play was also a priority, duo play was unintentionally neglected.

“We did put a lot of effort into creating this experience that was playable for solo players in as much as the rules and new systems allowed,” Ishizaki explained. “So in putting all our efforts into that aspect, we kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect, but this is something that we are looking at and considering for post-launch support as well.”

Will a two-player mode be added?

While FromSoftware has not officially confirmed a duo mode, Ishizaki’s comments suggest that the team is actively exploring the possibility. The studio has also promised a healthy amount of post-launch content, including new bosses, enemies, and classes, meaning a two-player mode could be part of future updates.

For now, players who want to team up with just one friend will have to matchmake with a third player, but that may change in the months following release.

While Elden Ring Nightreign launches without a dedicated two-player mode, FromSoftware’s openness to post-launch support suggests that duo play could be added in the future. Fans eager for a more intimate co-op experience should keep an eye on upcoming updates, players can only hope they also consider adding crossplay.
