Goodbye Wakanda, Electronic Arts cancels Cliffhanger Games’ Black Panther game
The studio behind the game, Cliffhanger Games, also closes its doors following EA’s cutbacks.
Almost two years since its announcement, the AAA Black Panther game has been cancelled by Electronic Arts, which also caused the definitive closure of its developer, Cliffhanger Games.
Farewell to the Black Panther solo game
According to information obtained by IGN, Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment, sent an internal email to her team announcing a new round of layoffs and closures within the organization. Among those affected are the closure of the Cliffhanger Games studio and the cancellation of the Black Panther project. These also include “laying off some individuals on both its mobile and central teams.”
“These decisions are hard,” Miele wrote. “They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”
Despite these changes, EA says it will continue to focus on other key franchises such as Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends. In addition, development continues on projects such as the upcoming Mass Effect by BioWare, the third Star Wars Jedi title by Respawn, and the Iron Man game developed by Motive.
Since its announcement in 2023, the Black Panther game had not received any significant updates, except for a job listing that indicated it would be a single-player action adventure. Cliffhanger Games, the studio in charge, was composed of former Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor developers and was founded that same year.
Electronic Arts and Marvel signed an deal to develop three titles based on Marvel characters. With Black Panther cancelled and Iron Man still in development, the third of these games remains officially unannounced.
