It’s official: a ‘Rick and Morty’ movie is already in development and is inspired by a Steven Spielberg classic

The film would mark the big-screen debut of one of animation’s most macabre duos.

‘Rick and Morty’ is one of the biggest hits in animation over the past decade. The series debuted in 2013 as a wildly off-the-wall parody of the relationship between Marty and Doc in ‘Back to the Future.’ And although its creators had already launched experimental projects some time earlier, it was that year that Cartoon Network premiered its new show for Adult Swim. And it certainly didn’t turn out badly. The series cemented the channel’s adult programming block, and thirteen years later, it’s still going stronger than ever. In fact, its ninth season premiered less than a month ago, and the future plans for this universe are enormous—just like Rick’s madness.

Some time ago, it was confirmed that, aside from the adventures of the grandfather and grandson, audiences would be able to enjoy a new series based on one of the show’s most recognizable characters. ‘President Curtis’ will be the serialized spin-off featuring the character voiced by Keith David. Scheduled to premiere in late 2026, this will be the second project this year from the universe created by Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland. However, the ambitions go even further, as the series aims to leap to the big screen. According to information reported by Collider, which spoke with Michael Ouweleen, president of Cartoon Network, the film is set to premiere in 2027.

A memory that fuels aspirations

In the aforementioned article, the network’s president spoke about this new project, without revealing many details and focusing on Dan Harmon. “These guys understand story and adventure better than anybody,” Ouweleen begins. Although the story is still in development and far from being finalized, there is one particular point of reference: “What Dan would want to do with the Rick and Morty movie is that he indelibly remembers going to see the Indiana Jones movies, so he’s solving for that feeling of walking out. He’s like, ‘I want to replicate the feeling of walking out and hitting the sidewalk having just seen an Indiana Jones.’”

Along those lines, Ouweleen spoke about the standards set by the series’ co-creator himself: “And you know he holds himself to a high bar, so that’s the bar he’s holding himself to on that thing.” However, despite these few details about this new production, the president of Cartoon Network has stated that the intention was to create a project that could be enjoyed by both fans of the series and those who haven’t watched it. “You won’t have to have studied Rick and Morty,’” notes Ouweleen, who hasn’t even ventured to reveal the title yet.
