Javier Bardem looks menacing as he transforms into Max Cady in Apple TV+’s ‘Cape Fear’ remake

The Oscar winner steps into one of Robert De Niro’s most chilling roles in a 10-episode thriller produced by Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.

Update:

Apple TV+ is bringing back ‘Cape Fear’, the 1991 psychological thriller directed by Martin Scorsese, with Javier Bardem taking on the role of Max Cady, a ruthless ex-convict seeking revenge. The first set photos reveal Bardem’s menacing transformation, complete with tattoos and piercings, giving the character a distinctly unsettling presence.

Joining Bardem is Amy Adams, who plays Amanda Bowden, a reimagined version of the character originally portrayed by Jessica Lange. Patrick Wilson also stars as Sam Bowden, the lawyer whose past decisions come back to haunt him.

What is ‘Cape Fear’ about?

Based on John D. MacDonald’s novel ‘The Executioners’, the series follows Max Cady, a convicted criminal who spends 14 years in prison after his lawyer, Sam Bowden, deliberately withholds evidence that could have exonerated him.

Upon his release, Cady embarks on a relentless campaign of terror, targeting Bowden and his family in a twisted game of psychological warfare. Unlike previous adaptations, this version will reportedly shift the legal dynamics, with Amanda Bowden playing a more central role in the unfolding drama.

Who’s behind the remake?

The 10-episode series is written and showrun by Nick Antosca (The Act, Candy), with Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg serving as executive producers. The show is described as a “tense, Hitchcockian thriller”, exploring America’s obsession with true crime in the modern era.

When does ‘Cape Fear’ premiere?

Apple TV+ has yet to confirm an official release date, but production is currently underway in Atlanta, Georgia.
