DC Studios

‘Joker 2’ fails in the box office with earning smaller than Marvel’s worst release ever

‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ wasn’t quite the success it expected to be during its release weekend in the United States, not even surpassing ‘The Marvels’

Joker 2′ is having a tough release in theaters. Next to the cold reception by critics - with disastrous notes - and the public, the movie has bombed hard at the box office when compared to other comic adaptations in its first weekend, falling even below Marvel Studios’ least successful film until the moment: ‘The Marvels’.

After its release weekend, ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, has only managed to collect $39 million at the domestic box office, below the 46 million dollars of ‘The Marvels’ in its first weekend in the United States.

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ way below ‘The Marvels’ in the box office

The situation is even more complicated if we take into account the enormous budget of the sequel by Todd Phillips, which was somewhere around 200 million dollars; although it could be worse, since the budget for ‘The Marvels’ was close to the 300 million. Be that as it may, and returning to DC, box office forecasts continue to decline with each passing day, even more so compared to the opening weekend of the first ‘Joker’ and its initial revenue of $96 million.

Of course, despite having a budget smaller than ‘The Marvels’, everything indicates that ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ will become one of the biggest failures of Warner Bros. of this year, both economically and in perception by the general public; and we must remember that 2019′s ‘Joker’ exceeded 1 billion dollars at the box office, being considered one of the best films of its year and one of the best adaptations of a comic book character in history.
