Nintendo Switch 2: The company is overwhelmed by preorders, new measures announced
Nintendo President Furukawa made a statement on X detailing the lottery system adjustments in response to the skyrocketing demand.

Nintendo has confirmed that demand for the Switch 2 has far surpassed expectations, with 2.2 million preorder applications in Japan alone via the My Nintendo Store. To prevent shortages and manage demand, the company is adjusting its lottery-based preorder system while ramping up production ahead of its June 5, 2025 launch.
Lottery system adjustments and additional preorder opportunities
Nintendo is using a lottery-based system for My Nintendo Store preorders, but the surge in applications has led to modifications. Instead of requiring unsuccessful applicants to reapply, Nintendo will now automatically carry them over to the next round.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa acknowledged the overwhelming demand, stating:
“We received applications from an astonishing 2.2 million people in Japan alone. However, this far exceeded our prior expectations and greatly surpasses the number of Nintendo Switch 2 units we can deliver from the My Nintendo Store on June 5.”
Additionally, Japanese retailers and online stores will begin offering preorders on April 24, giving fans new opportunities to secure a console outside of the lottery process. Furukawa reassured customers that ongoing shipments will ensure stock replenishment post-launch, saying:
“With the cooperation of our retail partners, we will continue shipments to ensure as many Nintendo Switch 2 units as possible reach your hands, and we will keep striving to achieve this.”

Production ramp-up and future availability
Furukawa also addressed concerns about supply shortages, emphasizing that Nintendo is working to boost production to meet global demand:
“We are planning to produce and ship a substantial number of Nintendo Switch 2 units moving forward. We sincerely apologize for the time it will take to fully meet your expectations and kindly ask for your understanding.”
Nintendo’s adjustments to the lottery system, additional preorder options, and increased production efforts demonstrate its commitment to meeting Switch 2’s unexpected demand.
