Nintendo talks about its plans for Animal Crossing on Switch 2: “It will be simple”
Nintendo Switch’s second best seller will allow players to easily transfer their islands.

During the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct on April 2, or even the earlier one in March, fans might have expected news about several games. While many titles were addressed—such as Mario Kart World, which is coming to the new console following its predecessor’s success of over 67 million units sold—some notable ones were absent. Among those was Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the second best-selling game on the original Nintendo Switch, with over 47 million units sold. However, news about the game has finally surfaced.
Switch 2’s second best seller gets an update, of sorts
In a recent interview with Polygon, Programming Management Group Senior Director Takuhiro Dohta spoke about the game, and how players will seamlessly be able to transfer their islands to the Nintendo Switch 2. The new device will give players the option to do a complete system transfer from their old consoles, which will move all of the system’s data over, including their islands.
“So I should clarify that when you do the system transfer, everything like save data will remain on the Nintendo Switch and once it moves to the Nintendo Switch 2 as well,” Dohta explained. “But the island will be an actual move. So it will leave Nintendo Switch and move over to Nintendo Switch 2.”, meaning that player’s won’t be able to access it on the old device anymore after.
Seamless island transfers on Switch 2
This could mean that users will no longer have to use the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Island Transfer Tool app to move their islands to the Nintendo Switch 2, or the more tedious cloud option, that required players to contact Nintendo, as it was more of a last resort measure. That is unless they don’t do the complete system transfer, or don’t have their old console on hand to do it, then maybe it will be back to the old ways.
