Rebel Moon Director’s Cut will be ‘almost like a different movie,’ says Zack Snyder

Zack Snyder has ambitious plans for the Rebel Moon universe. After the premiere of the first part on Netflix just a few days ago, the popular director is raising expectations for the new version of the film, which will be released soon and already has a confirmed sequel. The “director’s cut” will not be the original “extended cut” but will be “almost like a different movie.” This was confirmed by the filmmaker himself in statements to the Associated Press (via ScreenRant).

“It’s not an ‘extended cut’ of this movie. It’s almost like a different movie. It’s almost a different universe that [the R-rated cut] lives in than this movie. The reason for that is because it’s such a philosophical thing to shoot a director’s cut of a movie before you finish this version. All of my director’s cuts existed as a response to the things that were demanded of me to take out of the theatrical version, right? With [Rebel Moon], that demand was never really made.”

The main difference between the published version and the future Director’s Cut is the age rating. The current age rating is 13+, while the new version is aimed at the penultimate level of the North American rating system: R. What does that mean? That the viewing age should be at least 17 when accompanied by an adult. Snyder recognizes that not all demand will be for the latter, so he sees it as normal for production companies to secure investment for a more general audience range.

What the filmmaker did not anticipate was that he would have so much freedom to create this new edition. “[They were] like, ‘What if we said do whatever you want over here? Do the PG-13 version and then go nuts [with the other cut]. We don’t care.’ That was a thing I’ve never experienced before.” Snyder concludes by saying that viewers can expect a “really crazy experience.”
