The Lord of the Rings: Gollum had a messy development, and ChatGPT is only a part of it

Two ex-workers of the studio behind the development of Gollum revealed some truths about the game’s disastrous development cycle.

Last May, the development team of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, published a letter to apologize to all those who expected better from the video game with the worst evaluation in Metacritic in 2023, with 34 points out of 100. The reason? A delivery that left no one happy. Months later, it was discovered that the text sent by Daedalic was written by ChatGPT.

Through an interview conducted by GameTwo with two former employees of Daedalic, they claimed that the letter was written under ChatGPT and that they realized it when they saw it on the Internet since the ones behind it was the NACON team, publishers of the video game.

The apology letter about Gollum was made on ChatGPT

The letter made in ChatGPT started by indicating that “We would like to sincerely apologize for the underwhelming experience many of you have had with The Lord of the Rings: Gollum upon its release.”, which was also analyzed in X/Twitter by various users, who checked the document through the artificial intelligence platform.

And as those two former workers acknowledged, they were surprised to see the text, since they did not write it. “At Daedalic, we understand that a game’s success relies on the enjoyment and satisfaction of its players. We genuinely value your feedback and have been actively listening to your voices, reading your comments, and analyzing the constructive criticism and suggestions you have provided,” the text stressed.

Gollum had little budget for its development

In addition to the letter, these two former Daedalic workers, indicated that Gollum had a low budget for its development (15 million dollars), which did not help them create a good product, with it being an extremely low sum for a Triple-A title, which often cost at least 70 million dollars and 120 million if it is a large delivery.

“There were people working on the game who have been developers for 10, 15, 20 years. They are good, but they can’t do magic because they weren’t given the funds.”, indicated the former senior developer and technical director of Daedalic, Paul Schulze.
