Marvel Studios

The Russo brothers reveal the comics on which they will base ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’

Both directors will base on two essential series in Marvel’s history.

While assuring that “we always create our own version of history,” the Russo brothers are very clear about the comics on which the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ movies (due in 2026 and 2027, respectively) will be based. The ones they have read from top to bottom over and over again for inspiration. There will be two: the original ‘Secret Wars’ series written by Jim Shooter, published between 1984 and 1985, and the contemporary version by Jonathan Hickman that was published between 2015 and 2016.

“I grew up with the original series. It’s the one that got me into Marvel comics,” confesses Joe Russo. “Hickman’s is also fantastic and both are very different from each other in many ways, so we’ll take inspiration from both.” The director is not wrong. The first one is a cameo-fest in which an alien wants to wipe out the universe (fun, but today somewhat simple) and the second one is the one that used Doom as the great anti-hero and deranged god who ‘saved’ us.

With the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Doom, not Iron-Man, it’s clear that they weren’t exactly going to give him a small role and the plot of Hickman’s series is gaining momentum. Now the question is, will the X-Men finally make it to the MCU, and will they arrive in time for Battleworld?

The Russo brothers shake up Marvel

We will see if the return of the Russo brothers to the MCU ends up being as good as it seems because the background does not invite optimism. Since they left Marvel, both directors have gone from failure to failure, and I’ll take my chances. First there was ‘Cherry’, in 2013; a war drama about post-traumatic stress with Tom Holland in the lead role. It flopped, but it had a pass. Then came‘The Gray Man, back in 2016; a thriller that managed to waste the talents of Ryan Gosling and Ana de Armas. And this Friday comes ‘Electric State’, with which we’ll see what the public says, but the critics have already passed sentence. The film barely has a 10% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has become the worst rated film of the career of both filmmakers.

On top of that, it has done so with a budget of 320 million, which makes it one of the most expensive films in history, more than, for example, blockbusters like ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, ‘Justice League’, ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ or ‘Star Wars: Episode IX - Rise of Skywalker’.
