Zack Snyder's 'Man of Steel' second unit director slams James Gunn's new 'Superman' suit

Clay Staub, who worked with the ‘Watchmen’ director on the first film of the defunct DCEU, rips David Corenswet’s costume design.

Without warning and to the surprise of Superman fans and superhero fans in general, James Gunn released the first official full image of David Corenswet’s new Man of Steel costume for his ‘Superman’ movie, scheduled for release in July 2025. And he did so amidst controversy, especially from those who still don’t want to turn the page on the previous cinematic universe and its Superman, Henry Cavill. Be that as it may, a collaborator of Zack Snyder in ‘Man of Steel” has joined the criticism of the new costume of the famous superhero, questioning both its design and the very composition of the image.

Criticism of Superman’s new suit and its photography

Thus, Clay Staub, who worked as a second unit director on Zack Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel,’ remember, the 2013 film that launched the now defunct DCEU, joined the criticism on social media of the costume of David Corenswet’s new cinematic Superman, pointing out that it looks rubbery, as well as questioning both the actor’s pose and the composition of the image itself, which has already become a meme:

“Who thought this was the best option for a First Look? Really, I’m not joking, speaking solely from the layout perspective, the pose (pulling his boot on) making the suit chest and arms look bulky and rubbery. BTW are those Trunks we’re returning to, I’m asking for a friend?,” wrote the production engineer.

While some fans have shown their enthusiasm for this new version of Superman in the movies, many are among those who have been somewhat displeased with a picture that does not seem to live up to what Gunn had previously promised about his vision of the Man of Steel, both in the design of the costume and the posture of the character, in addition to a composition that raises more questions than answers. Or maybe that’s Gunn’s intention? ‘Superman’ will be released on July 11, 2025.
