Astros stun Yankees in extra innings thriller
The Texans needed a run-scoring hit from Carlos Correa to break the tie in the tenth inning.
The Houston Astros (65-51) beat the New York Yankees (61-55) 5-3 in extra innings to take the first game of their weekend series at Yankee Stadium. The Texas club needed a clutch RBI from Carlos Correa in the 10th inning and a spectacular close from Josh Hader to secure the win.
Altuve torments Yankees again
José Altuve has a reputation for haunting Yankees fans, and he did it again from the very first inning. After Dominican outfielder Jesús Sánchez reached on a grounder up the middle, the Venezuelan slugger launched his 20th home run of the season over the left-field wall. The blast from the Maracay native traveled 389 feet and left the bat at nearly 110 mph.
The visitors’ lead held for five innings thanks to an excellent outing from Hunter Brown, who kept the Yankees quiet. But the home team tied it up in the sixth with a solid hitting rally. Ben Rice got them on the board with an RBI single that drove in Ryan McMahon, and Aaron Judge followed with a liner to center that brought home Austin Wells to level the score.
The game stayed tied through nine innings, until Correa broke the deadlock in the 10th with a run-scoring single that plated Altuve, who had started the frame as the ghost runner. After both Correa and Christian Walker were retired at second, Taylor Trammell crushed his third home run of the year – a two-run shot – to give Houston breathing room.
Yankees squander late chance
New York began the bottom of the 10th with Amed Rosario’s flyout, which moved Jazz Chisholm Jr. to third. The Yankees looked poised to extend the game when Anthony Volpe drove in a run with a sharp hit to left, but the rally stalled.
Paul Goldschmidt flied out to right, and Giancarlo Stanton, pinch-hitting, drew a walk to put two men on. With the game on the line, Trent Grisham made contact against Hader, but Chas McCormick made a superb grab to record the 27th out.
