Average MLB salary now $5 million according to AP study: From $760,000 to Juan Soto’s $61.9 million yearly pay
Eggs aren’t the only product getting more expensive these days. MLB salaries are breaking the bank for some teams with huge payrolls to try to make it to the World Series.

Juan Soto left the Yankees after the 2024 season to look for a team willing to pay him what he’s worth. The All-Star hitter got rewarded by the New York Mets and will be earning $61.9 million in 2025. Pitcher Zack Wheeler of the Phillies will earn $42 million this season and Jacob deGrom of the Rangers and Aaron Judge with the Yankees will both earn $40 million.

AP reports this is the first time in MLB history that the average salary for players broke the $5 million barrier. Of course, not all players are making $40+ million, but the majority of them are earning over $1 million. On Opening day 55 percent of the league’s 953 players had salaries over the $1 million mark. At the start of the 2025 season there were 35 players earning the league minimum of $760,000.

The Dodgers are close behind the Mets in payroll, but we must take into consideration that several of their top players have accepted deferred payments to help bring in top talent without excessively increasing the competitive balance tax. Shohei Ohtani is one of those players. The Japanese star will receive $28.2 million in 2025 instead of $70 million because his salary won’t be paid in full until 2035.
