How the Yankees’ own mistakes handed the Red Sox a crucial victory in New York
Defensive errors and a late homer from Roman Anthony sealed the Red Sox victory in New York.
The Boston Red Sox (69-59) went into Yankee Stadium, faced their rivals, and came away with a 6-3 win thanks largely to New York Yankees mistakes. With the loss, the Yankees (69-58) now hold just a half-game lead for the top American League Wild Card spot. The win went to reliever Greg Weissert, his fifth of the season, while Luke Weaver took the defeat – his fourth of the year.
Yankee errors open the door
Boston’s first run came on a sequence of misplays. Masataka Yoshida reached on a ball Luis Gil couldn’t handle. Ceddanne Rafaela then hit a grounder that forced out Yoshida, but a poor throw to first allowed the Curaçaoan to advance to second. Rafaela stole third and scored when David Hamilton swiped second on a wild throw from catcher Ben Rice.
Rice immediately made up for it, tying the game with a solo home run. New York went ahead in the fourth on a Paul Goldschmidt RBI single. In the fifth, each side pushed across a run – Boston on a Nathaniel Lowe sac fly, the Yankees on a Jazz Chisholm Jr. RBI single.
Roman Anthony tied things again in the sixth with an RBI, and in the seventh Lowe doubled into the right-center gap to score Trevor Story all the way from first, giving Boston a 4-3 lead.
The Red Sox padded their advantage with two more in the ninth, helped by another Yankee error. With one out, Goldschmidt failed to handle a David Hamilton grounder. Moments later, rookie Roman Anthony homered to right field, stretching the lead to 6-3.
A former Yankee liquidates New York
Manager Alex Cora turned to Aroldis Chapman – who pitched for the Yankees from 2016 to 2022 – to close out the game against New York’s most dangerous hitters. The Cuban lefty retired Aaron Judge on a foul out, got Cody Bellinger on a grounder, and induced Giancarlo Stanton to ground out to first to finish off the win.
