Ciudad de México, México Update:

Last week, Astros general manager Dana Brown prevented Isaac Paredes from joining Team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic, citing the organization’s priorities. That decision now takes on a different tone after reports surfaced that the Mexican infielder has become Houston’s top trade candidate heading into spring training. According to The Athletic, the Astros are looking to trim their crowded infield group, and Paredes is the player with the most active market.

Is Paredes on his way out of Houston?

Houston held serious discussions about a three‑team deal that would have sent Paredes to the Boston Red Sox. That trade ultimately fell apart, and utility standout Brendan Donovan ended up with the Seattle Mariners instead.

Still, interest in Paredes hasn’t cooled. Beyond Boston, at least four other clubs—including the Pittsburgh Pirates—remain in talks with the Astros for the 25‑year‑old third baseman, whose value has risen more than that of teammate Christian Walker.

The most logical landing spot continues to be Boston, where the Red Sox are looking to fill the void left by Alex Bregman’s departure.

Meanwhile, the Astros want to bolster their outfield with left‑handed bats. Houston has shown particular interest in bringing back Wilyer Abreu, though Boston has been reluctant to move him. Despite previous failed attempts, sources say moving Paredes remains a priority for Brown’s front office before spring rosters are finalized.

Kept Out of the WBC

Paredes won’t suit up for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic due to restrictions imposed by the Astros, who are focused on preserving his trade value. Houston’s strategy is clear: maximize Paredes’ market while addressing instability in the outfield.

As the team prepares for the official start of spring training, the writing on the wall is hard to ignore. Paredes’ future appears increasingly likely to unfold somewhere other than Houston—with the Red Sox and Pirates currently leading the chase for his services.
