London Stadium crowd enthusiastic about MLB
The 54,662 fans who packed London Stadium for Game 1 of the Cubs-Cardinals series may not have been a sell out crowd, but they were certainly enthusiastic.
The 54,000 fans who packed London Stadium for Game 1 of the Cubs-Cardinals series may not have been a sell out crowd, but they were certainly enthusiastic. And they displayed that enthusiasm from the outset, when English cricket star Jimmy Anderson delivered a solid strike for the opening pitch.
They continued the celebration by cheering wildly for every run scored by the Cubs, particularly the two long balls smashed by Ian Happ.
The crowd was definitely Chicago-heavy, and even they gave applause to the Cardinals fans who showed their relief at not getting shut out when Paul Goldschmidt - the first MLB player to play in five different countries - hit an RBI single to score Tommy Edman.
And when Sweet Caroline was put on the PA system, everybody got into the act.
Take Me Out To The Ballgame in the seventh inning was delivered by actor Nick Offerman, and this brought the crowd to their feet once more. All in all, a great experience for Americans and Brits alike. Long may it continue!
