Update:

A true piece of baseball royalty is about to change hands: Lou Gehrig’s game-worn New York Yankees jersey from the magical 1937 season is headed to auction. And it’s expected to go for a jaw-dropping $3–4 million.

The special piece is from 1937, the year which marked Gehrig’s last full season before ALS began to take hold. During that campaign, he batted .351, smashing 37 home runs and driving in 159 runs, all while striking out just 49 times.

Experts believe that Gehrig wore it in several home games that season, including a standout performance on August 5 where he launched two homers and collected five RBIs. It has been suggested that it may have been worn during Game 2 of the 1937 World Series against the New York Giants.

And there’s more. It has also been confirmed that Gehrig wore the number 4 jersey in the iconic photo that was used as inspiration for The Iron Horse’s plaque in Monument Park in Yankee Stadium. It really does not get more iconic for a Yankees fan than this jersey.

The auction house, SCP Auctions, brought in three heavyweight firms, Resolution Photomatching, Sports Investors Authentication, and MeiGray, to verify its provenance using a technique known as photomatching technology.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time a Gehrig jersey has drawn big money. Earlier this year, his 1939 Yankees jersey, worn during his final home appearance at Yankee Stadium, fetched $2.71 million at a Christie’s auction. That one came with emotional weight: Gehrig’s consecutive-games streak had ended earlier that season after his ALS diagnosis.
