For the 41st time in history, prominent American baseball journalists used ballot voting to select the two best coaches of the existing MLB leagues for the 2023 season.

National League

Skip Schumaker, who became the Miami Marlins’ new manager in 2023, has been awarded the NL Manager of the Year Award. Schumaker took over from Don Mattingly, who had the most wins as a manager in franchise history but held a .430 winning percentage with the Marlins. Schumaker had a successful first year with Miami as they won 84 games, which was the most by the Marlins in an entire season since 2009 (87). They made the postseason the second time since their second World Series title in 2003 and the first since 2020.

This is the seventh time in the NL and the ninth time overall that the award went to someone in his first entire season as a major league manager. The other first-year NL winners were the Astros’ Hal Lanier (1986), the Giants’ Dusty Baker (1993), the Marlins’ Joe Girardi (2006), the Nationals’ Matt Williams (2014), the Dodgers’ Dave Roberts (2016), and the Diamondbacks’ Torey Lovullo (2017).

American League

Brandon Hyde, the Baltimore Orioles’ manager, has won the American League Manager of the Year award. With five seasons of experience, Hyde has proven himself an exceptional manager, leading the Orioles to their most successful season. This year, the team achieved an impressive 101 wins and won the AL East title for the first time since 2014, marking the first time they have surpassed 100 wins since 1980.

Hyde played a pivotal role in the team’s massive rebuild between 2019 and 2022, which resulted in remarkable progress. In 2022, the Orioles won 83 games, a 31-win improvement from the previous year, and continued to improve by 18 games this past season.

Despite making it to the ALCS, Hyde and the Orioles lost to the Texas Rangers, who became the 2023 World Series champions. Nonetheless, Hyde’s leadership and management skills have earned him well-deserved recognition as the American League Manager of the Year.
