Not the Dodgers or the Yankees: New name tops the MLB after fast start

The two teams dominated MLB in 2024 but they have made slow starts this season, ceding top spot in the standings.

Update:

A month into the 2025 MLB season the standings are starting to take shape, with a new name at the top of the overall table.

As it stands, the New York Mets are leading the running with 20 wins and nine losses to start the season. Behind them, the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers, the reigning champions, have slightly worse 19-10 records.

The Mets’ fast start has been built on an imperious home record, winning 12 of their first 13 games at Citi Field. In 2024 the Mets made it to the National League Championship Series but they had not managed a single postseason victory in the previous nine years.

Most impressive about their form is that we haven’t seen much from Juan Soto, the big money offseason signing that was tipped to transform the team’s fortunes. Through his first 29 games with the teams he has managed just three home runs.

After signing a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million deal with the Mets a lot was expected of Soto. However he is a proven talent in the MLB and there is an acceptance that he may need a little time to adapt to his new surroundings.

“He knows what he wants,” Mets co-hitting coach Jeremy Barnes said last week. “He’s a professional hitter. He has his routine. He sticks to his routine every single day. He knows what works for him and what doesn’t.”

All indications suggest that Soto will eventually regain his previous level in New York and recapture the form that made him one of the most coveted free agents of recent years. For now, Queens has a team that it can be proud of and one that looks set to challenge for a championship through the postseason.
