Polanco powers Seattle as Mariners end 24-year postseason drought

It hasn’t happened since 2001, coming behind Jorge Polanco’s two-homer night and a shut-down save by Andrés Muñoz.

The American League Division Series between the Seattle Mariners and the Detroit Tigers is now tied at one game apiece. Seattle held firm at home in Game 2, pulling off a tense 3–2 win to ensure the series will go at least four games. Matt Brash earned the victory, while Andrés Muñoz recorded the first postseason save of his career.

Mariners celebrate first home playoff win in 24 years

The victory was a milestone moment for the franchise – Seattle’s first postseason win at T-Mobile Park since 2001, when they defeated Cleveland in Game 5 of the ALDS. The crowd roared as Jorge Polanco powered the offense with two home runs.

Polanco takes Skubal deep twice

Tigers ace Tarik Skubal was dominant early, firing fastballs that reached 99 mph through three scoreless innings. But in the bottom of the fourth, Polanco connected for a solo shot to right field, breaking the deadlock. Later in the game, the Dominican infielder struck again – launching a sinker over the left-field wall to make it 2–0 Mariners.

Torkelson ties it, Rodríguez restores the lead

Detroit clawed back in the eighth. After Gleyber Torres drew a walk and Riley Greene reached base on a Josh Naylor fielding error, Spencer Torkelson doubled to bring both runners home, tying the score.

But Seattle immediately answered. Cal Raleigh led off the bottom of the frame with a double off Kyle Finnegan, and Julio Rodríguez delivered another clutch RBI double to left, putting the Mariners back on top. A perfect throw from Zack McKinstry to the plate prevented further damage, nailing Rodríguez as he tried to score on Eugenio Suárez’s grounder.

Muñoz slams the door

In the ninth, Detroit threatened but couldn’t capitalize. Muñoz struck out McKinstry, forced Javier Báez into a pop-up, and finished the game by fielding a grounder from Parker Meadows for the final out.

Game 3 heads to Detroit

Game 3 of the ALDS is set for October 7 at Comerica Park. The Tigers will start Jack Flaherty, while the Mariners turn to Logan Gilbert in a crucial matchup to break the tie.
